Maintaining your pet’s oral health is an important part of the overall health care of your dog or cat. Dental disease is one of the most common chronic diseases your furry friends will experience. Studies show that the chronic inflammation and infection caused by dental disease are linked to higher rates of liver, kidney, and even heart disease.
The Importance of Dental Checkups for Dogs and Cats
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) both recommend check-ups, including oral examinations and professional dental cleanings, at least once per year. However, more frequent oral examinations and professional cleanings may be recommended for those pets who are more prone to developing dental disease. You can achieve better management of your pet’s oral health between professional cleanings by performing at-home dental care. Consider brushing your pet’s teeth with toothpaste designed for dogs and cats, or trying antiseptic oral rinses and gels. Alternatively, check out the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC.org) for dental treat/chew options.
Monitor your pet for common signs of dental disease, such as bad breath, discolored or loose teeth, excessive tartar, swollen or bleeding gums, excessive drooling, and oral pain.
