What to Expect During Your Pet’s Awake Oral Examination

An oral examination is an important process in your veterinarian’s ability to assess the scope and severity of any problems involving your pet’s the mouth and teeth. This examination is commonly performed while your pet is awake and standing. During this time, your veterinarian will raise the lips and open the mouth enough to perceive a variety of issues. These issues can range from halitosis (bad breath), dental calculus (build-up on teeth), gingivitis (gum disease), fractured teeth, oral masses, tooth resorption (decay), and more.

Why Anesthetized Oral Examinations Are Also Necessary

While information obtained from an awake oral examination helps to gauge the scope of your pet’s oral problems, it is not a comprehensive examination. Many problems are not readily visible. Studies show that only 60-70% of oral pathology can be detected while your pet is awake. A more thorough oral examination along with diagnostic imaging (x-rays) while your pet is anesthetized is required to fully determine all of the problems. An awake oral examination during your pet’s annual check-up or initial dental consultation is a great tool to provide you with a general assessment of your pet’s oral health. A treatment plan with estimated costs can be prepared.
