Tongue Illness and Injury in Cats

Tongue illnesses and injuries in cats can manifest in various ways and may be caused by a range of factors. Below are some common conditions and injuries that can affect a cat’s tongue:

1. Oral Ulcers:

These are painful sores that can develop on the tongue due to various reasons, such as viral infections (e.g., feline calicivirus), immune-mediated diseases (Chronic Gingivostomatitis), or systemic health conditions.

2. Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex:

Eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC) is a group of skin conditions seen in cats that are characterized by the presence of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell involved in allergic reactions and inflammation. EGC is not a single disease but rather a collection of related conditions that can manifest in various forms, primarily affecting the skin and occasionally the oral cavity. This disease typically presents as raised, firm, and often ulcerated lesions.

3. Burns or Chemical Injuries:

Cats may accidentally burn their tongues from hot food or liquids, or they may ingest caustic substances that can damage the tissues.

4. Tumors:

Tumors, both benign and malignant, can develop on the tongue, leading to swelling, pain, and difficulty eating.

5. Foreign Bodies:

Cats can sometimes get foreign objects lodged in their mouths or tongues, which can cause irritation, injury, or infection.

6. Lacerations or Cuts:

Cats may injure their tongues during play (e.g., biting on sharp objects) or due to trauma (e.g., fights with other animals).

Symptoms of Tongue Problems in Cats:

– Difficulty eating or drinking

– Excessive drooling

– Bad breath (halitosis)

– Pawing at the mouth

– Swelling or discoloration of the tongue

– Oral bleeding

– Changes in behavior (e.g., lethargy, hiding)
