The average adult cat should have 30 teeth in their mouth. They have 16 teeth on their upper
jaw and 14 teeth on the bottom jaw. This can be further classified to 12 incisors, 4 canines, 10
pre-molars, and 4 molars. Most cats have 30 teeth, however this can often vary for a number of
reasons.
Is My Cat Missing a Tooth?
If your adult cat has fewer than 30 teeth, then they may have either lost a tooth due to a
breakage, previous extraction, or may have never developed the tooth to begin with. Common
reasons for broken teeth in cats are trauma or tooth resorption.
How Many Teeth Do Kittens Have?
Unlike adult cats, kittens only have 26 deciduous or “baby” teeth. They have 12 incisors, 4
canines, and 10 pre-molars. Kittens should begin eruption of the deciduous teeth around 1
month of age and should have all of the adult dentition erupting by 6 months of age.
